Skip The Dermatologist. Try Light Therapy

Having acne is a tough thing to deal with. Especially in the target range of 14 through 25, appearance is everything and acne can make things like prom or senior photos the hardest things to deal with. Once we got past the myths of what causes acne, then also got told to stop squeezing the bloody pimples away, we got sent to a dermatologist and tried everything under the sun to cure the problem. First we tried the creams, then the face washes, then once things got really bad, we got put on medication. Some of the medication that is being prescribed by dermatologists for acne, such as Accutane, is not the safest medication in the world and has even caused people to kill themselves. One of the alternatives that is being suggested for treating or reducing the amount of acne is light therapy. This style of therapy, also known as photodynamic therapy, involves a concentrated blue light that is placed over an area of the body. The length of exposure depends on the location of the acne and the amount of acne that is needed to be treated. In studies that were performed, photodynamic therapy has been proven to reduce the amount of bacteria by about 90 percent. The procedure is also completely safe to the human body. There are no UV rays that are used in the therapy and the eyes will not be damaged to due the glasses worn.

Stop Paying For Prescriptions, Buy A SAD Lamp

sad lights
Dealing with a condition like seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is not an easy task. There are a lot of depression medications on the market, but not everyone is able to spend a lot of money on prescriptions month after month. One suggestion to help treat the symptoms of SAD without the use of any medication is a lamp. A full spectrum lamp will emit higher doses of light to mimic sunlight in the eyes, causing an effect of an early sunrise. This helps combat one of the major causes of SAD, the reduced level of sunlight that is present in fall and winter. First mentioned in a scientific journal in 1984, the therapy has worked for many persons who have SAD and other conditions, such as depression, eating disorders and behavioral issues. Even if the condition is not that serious, jet lag for example, a lamp may be able to provide a major source of treatment. A study was published in the American Journal of Psychiatry in 2005 that investigates the use of light therapy to treat or relieve the symptoms of SAD and other mood disorders and found it successful. In that same study, performed by the University of North Carolina, light therapy is found to be as effective as prescription medication. The article cautions the use of the therapy on the elderly and children, who have more sensitive eyes than most. It is not certain if the lamp could affect their eyes in a adverse way, such as causing cataracts.

You Might Not Be SAD, But You Still Could Use Light Therapy

Light therapy has a number of uses.  It can be used to treat acne or sleep problems.  Most notably, it is used to treat a disease known as Seasonal Affective Disorder
Seasonal Affective Disorder affects people who live in cold climates.  It comes every winter season, when the sun comes out less, and the cold comes out more.  Seasonal Affective Disorder lasts throughout the winter and usually goes away with the coming of spring.  People who suffer from SAD usually experience depression, weight gain, and withdrawal from social situations.  It can be extremely difficult to live with seasonal affective disorder.

SAD is brought on due to a lack of sunlight exposure.  When moving to a different location is out of the question, the next best solution is light therapy.  Light therapy is conducted regularly for about 15 to 30 minutes per session.  It uses high energy light to simulate the sun and help reverse the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder.  But SAD may not be the only disease light therapy can help.

New research shows that light therapy is an effective treatment option for non-seasonal mood disorders.  People who suffer from mental disease, particularly mood disorders may be affected by light exposure.  Light therapy can be an effective method in helping these patients receive the sunlight they need.  It can also help to control their mood disorders.
