Have you ever felt really sad and wanted to feel better but you did not know how?  This is a common feeling of many individuals who suffer from depression. Often they feel like they are in a hole and they do not know how to pull themselves out.  It is not that they do not want to be happy, more so that they do not understand or know how to be happy.
When individuals are suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, they experiencing similar thoughts, however, they are not permanent.  SAD is a condition that only remains during the winter months.  However, many people tend to wonder what the “winter months” mean.
Obviously, the length of time may vary depending on the severity in each patient.  However, SAD could begin as early as September and last as long as April.  The length may also vary depending on the location of the individual.  If the person is living in a climate where winter begins later in the year, than SAD may not begin until October or November.  However, there are many areas where the sun will disappear for months and this 8 month time period is a great indication of the extent of time an individual should expect to experience SAD symptoms.
If you live in an area where it is cold and are prone to depression, consider investing in a SAD therapy lamp.  It will help combat the symptoms and help you to be happier during the winter months.

Levels Of SAD

All medical conditions have statistics.  These statistics provide researchers with facts to help them better study the symptoms and causes of the condition.  Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a well studied condition that definitely has a variety of statistics.  These statistics put into perspective how severe the disease is and how at risk you are for developing it.
From the research, it is evident that those who suffer from SAD live in very cold climates.  There is a definite lack of sunlight exposure that translates to development of the disorder.  One of the prime spots for exposure to the disease is Northern Europe.
In these areas, about 2 percent of the population will experience a severe form of SAD.  This means they will develop most or all of the symptoms that relate to the disorder and the symptoms will last for a while.  Another 10 percent of the population will develop a milder form of SAD.  They might experience some symptoms of SAD but not all of them.  The disorder may not last as long with these individuals.
Although the disorder does tend to occur in very cold climates, it does occur in other areas.  Therefore, there could be a possibility that you are suffering from SAD even if you don’t live in Finland.
