If you visit your dermatologist today for help with your acne, he or she will most likely prescribe you medication.  This medication can come in different forms.  You might apply something topically on your face (i.e. a cleanser or a cream).  Or, you might take an oral antibiotic.  The goal, however, is to get rid of the acne, which your dermatologist considers to be an infection on your skin.

Problem With Typical Treatments

One of the biggest issues with treating acne is that it does not always work right away.  Some patients have to try several medications.  And, even when they find the right one, it still takes time.  Many dermatologist offices have started offering light therapy treatments as an alternative way to treat acne.

Light Therapy

Light therapy has been proven to be effective at treating acne, however it can be costly.  If it is not in your budget, you are not out of luck.  You may want to try the SAD therapy lamps.  These lamps work in a similar manner and might be effective at treating your acne.  And, the best part is they are affordable.  You do not even need a prescription to purchase one!  Try one today.  It could definitely conquer your acne problems!

How Do You Diagnose SAD?

sad lights

One of the biggest stumbling blocks that doctors deal with when it comes to Seasonal Affective Disorder is the initial diagnosis.  Once, they have determined a patient has SAD than the rest of the process is much easier.  However, the process leading up to the diagnosis can be difficult.

Why Diagnosis Is Difficult

The main reason that it is difficult to diagnosis SAD is because a patient with SAD can appear to be suffering from normal depression.  The symptoms are typically the same.  These patients tend to feel sad, moody, and even anxious.  Often they will lose interest in their normal activities.  It is not abnormal for them to experience weight changes and even a change in their eating patterns.  And, of course, both conditions will most likely cause fatigue and patients will tend to sleep more than normal.

Proper Diagnosis

In order to distinguish between the two conditions, it may take a little time.  A doctor might need record of two seasons where the patient was depressed and then experienced a mood change when the season ended.  As a patient, it will be important to document your moods and keep records of the treatment process.  Also, those individuals whose relatives have had SAD will most likely be diagnosed with SAD.
If you are unsure what condition you have, be patient.  In time, you will figure it out.  However, you can always take advantage of the SAD therapy lamps.  Although they are focused on treating SAD, they have also been proven to help eliminate some of the side effects that come with Depression.

Older People Are Happier In The Winter

sad lights

When I was a little kid, all I could think about during school was when it was going to be over.  I longed for the days when school was out and I could go to soccer practice.  And, more specifically, I looked forward to summer when school was not in session.  This longing is common of most kids.  However, it is somewhat interesting given that the summer months are not as busy and do not provide easy access to friend time.  It may be, however, that all of these children love the summer so much because of the weather.

The Sun Equals Happiness

A lot of research has been done on the effects of the sun.  And, although much of it suggests that there is a downside to the sun, there is also an upside.  The sun can help elevate your mood.  Exposure to sunlight actually produces a chemical reaction in your brain, stimulating serotonin production.  Serotonin is responsible for elevating individuals moods and can help eliminate depression.  Individuals that do not see the sun in during the winter can sometimes develop a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.

SAD

SAD is a common type of depression that many people are treated for today.  However, it is interesting that the older you get the less likely your chances are of developing this condition and having it reoccur each season.  Unlike most conditions, those individuals that are younger are more at risk for developing SAD.
The truth is older individuals might just be happier in the winter months and better able to cope with the season changes.
