During the winter months, the medical community talks a lot about the winter blues.  This is a common type of depression that many people experience.  And, if the depression is serious it can present itself in a condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  Those individuals that suffer from SAD often seek medical attention to help eliminate their SAD symptoms so that they can enjoy the winter months.

SAD Vs. The Winter Blues

Although SAD is different than the typical winter blues, both are still problems.  And, according to research, many people suffer from the Winter Blues every winter season even if they do not have Winter Depression.  Therefore, many wonder if there is help available for the more mild symptoms that occur for the Winter Blues.  The truth is no one wants to suffer any type of winter blues.  They would prefer to be happy all year around.

Treating The Winter Blues

Interestingly, you can easily treat the Winter Blues like you would treat SAD.  Although you might not be able to get prescription drugs to help with your mood, you can purchase over the counter light therapy products that should be effective at stimulating your mood.  Your dosage may be less than that of a SAD sufferer, however the idea will be the same.

sad lights

Many individuals go through several winter seasons never realizing that they suffer from a type of depression known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

SAD is a condition that is not your fault.  It is a problem that occurs every fall and winter season as the sun disappears leaving an absence of light in your life.  This lack of light causes a chemical reaction in your body and it can alter your mood.  It is not until the sun reappears during the spring and summer that your normal mood will return.

SAD Is Often Under Treated

Unfortunately, many people assume that they simply are feeling down because it is the winter.  They attribute their feelings to a case of the winter blues that they hope will get better.  However, too often these symptoms get worse as the season progresses.

Are You Feeling Out Of Funk?

If you are feeling out of funk during these months, you could be a candidate for this condition.  Although not every case of the winter blues translates to someone that is affected with SAD, many do.  And, the only way to know for sure is by talking to your doctor.  Make sure to assess your mood and make sure that you are still happy during the winter.
