Will My Doctor Perform Any Tests To Diagnose SAD?

It is relatively difficult to diagnose Seasonal Affective Disorder today. And, although it is a more difficult disease to diagnose, many people actually do suffer from it. Often it is a condition that is left untreated. And, sometimes, individuals are not upfront with their symptoms and medical history when they first visit their doctor. This can make the diagnosis process more difficult. Since it is a more difficult condition to diagnose, many people wonder how it is diagnosed. Some wonder if tests will be needed.
Diagnosis
There are no medical tests that are performed to diagnose SAD. Your doctor will focus on the mental issues at hand, because SAD is a mental health issue. Therefore, to correctly diagnose the problem, he or she will ask you a variety of detailed questions. These questions will center on your mood, seasonal changes in your thoughts and behavior, your lifestyle and social situation, sleeping and eating patterns, etc. You might need to fill out a questionnaire.
Physical Exam
If during the process of questioning, your doctor is concerned that you may have a physical condition that is causing or even worsening the depression you are experiencing, then you might have to do blood tests and other tests to determine the problem. However, in most cases, these patients are not people that suffer from SAD. Also, many doctors perform a physical exam to make sure there are no physical issues that could be causing the depression.
