How Long Will This Last?

One of the common questions regarding Seasonal Affective Disorder is how long it will last.  In fact, this is a common question that many patients that suffer with mental illnesses ask.  Unfortunately, there really is no set answer for this question.

Circumstances Play A Role

Often when it comes to treating mental illnesses, circumstances play a role.  Therefore, if something traumatic occurred, it is likely for you to suffer more than if you were just going along normally.  However, there are other times where there is no good explanation.  And, sometimes the longer symptoms go untreated, the worse they become.

SAD

When it comes to SAD, typically once a person develops the condition, they will continue to present depression-like symptoms every winter.  For many people, this can be frustrating.  However, the good news is that once you understand you have SAD, you can prepare for it.  Every time the season changes, you can begin treating the SAD instead of waiting and wondering why you are feeling a certain way.  Also, just because you have SAD, does not mean anything is wrong with you.  It simply means that your body reacts differently to changes in the season.  And, you will need to work to treat it.

Look Out For Your Teens

If you are a parent, you probably have a lot to be concerned about when it comes to your teenager.  First of all, you are probably concerned for their safety.  Obviously, as a parent you want your teen to be successful as well.  And, at the top of almost all parents’ priority lists for their teens is probably health.

Health

Health comes in a variety of shapes and sizes.  Typically when you think of health, you might assume that you are trying to avoid germs and stay healthy so you do not get the flu.  You might also consider eating properly.  This is also important for good health.  However, too often when it comes to today’s teens, we forget to include mental illnesses among the list of important threats and/or risks to be concerned about.  After all, mental illnesses are very prevalent and our teens have more pressure today than ever.

SAD And Teens

Interestingly, one mental illness is common with teens.  Seasonal Affective Disorder is known to begin occurring in individuals during their teenage years and continues every winter there after.  Therefore, if you have teenagers, it is important to check in and evaluate their mental health.  Make sure that they are doing ok.  If they are not, talk to a doctor about possible treatment options.

Women And The Winter

sad lights

Women are known for being the more hormonal of the two sexes.  Women are more prone to emotional issues.  They are happy and sad, experience ups and downs, and feel stressed more often than men.  Although life’s circumstances may be the same for both sexes, a difficult situation can cause a woman to react differently than a man.

During The Winter

During the winter, it is common for most people to experience a case of the winter blues.  This happens when it gets cold, when it rains, or when the sun does not shine.  However, it is easier for most men to cope with these weather changes than women.  These changes in the weather can be particularly difficult for women.  Often women are more prone to mental illness and a case of the winter blues could lead to a more serious condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This condition is a type of depression that presents itself during the winter months.

If You Are SAD

The majority of individuals that suffer from SAD are women.  Although some men do develop this condition, statistics indicate most sufferers are women.  This means that women need to be more aware during the winter months.  If they notice a change in their behavior, they should talk to their doctor and get treatment.

Advice For The Workaholic

sad lights

In today’s economy, we are in need of people who will work.  There seems to be a lack of those that are willing to work hard and a surplus of people that want something for nothing.  The saying, “you reap what you sow” holds true in today’s economy.  And, today more than ever we are in need of good workers.  However, there are some that could be classified as workaholics.  Maybe you fall into this category.

Workaholics

Workaholics perform their fair share of work and then go above and beyond the call of duty.  In fact, they probably do more than necessary because they love to work.  While this is a good thing and sometimes the nature of their job requires it, it is important that these individuals understand the risks involved with overworking.

Health Risks

Most importantly, there are a variety of health risks that could be involved with being a workaholic.  Many of these people tend to oversleep.  In addition, one of the worries for these people is that they never leave their desks.  This means that they stay inside throughout the day.  This can put them more at risk for mental illnesses like depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder.  In order for them to avoid these risks, they should really cut back on their work.  However, most workaholics probably will not do this.  Therefore, they might want to use a light box daily to mimic sunlight exposure since they never see the sun.  This will prevent the risks of mental illnesses.
