Vitamin D


Time in the sun allows the body to receive vitamin D.  This vitamin plays a vital role in many organs in the body.  It is necessary for bone growth and bone health.  Without enough vitamin D, your bones might become brittle, thin, or misshapen.  It is not enough to simply drink milk.  You must also take in the sun as well.


Serotonin


In addition to vitamin D, the sun also provides the body with serotonin.  Serotonin is a hormone that regulates your mood.  Without enough serotonin, you might be subject to irritability, moodiness, and even depression.  For this reason, many people suffer winter depression.  This condition is commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This seasonal illness can be treated, however, if left alone the symptoms can worsen.  Therefore, if you are lacking sun, talk to your doctor about ways to help you in your life.

Little children are often afraid of the dark.  Lots of money has been invested in night lights to help kids overcome their fear of the dark.  After all, a little light is better than complete darkness.  Unfortunately, during the winter months light can be difficult to come by – especially natural light.

The lack of light during the winter can be depressing.  And, although individuals are typically not afraid of the dark once they’ve reached a certain age, they also tend to prefer the daylight.  Light corresponds with happiness.  There is a scientific reason behind this.  Sunlight provides our bodies with serotonin – a hormone that regulates our mood.  Without it, we can experience irritability and even depression.  This is why many individuals develop Seasonal Affective Disorder during the winter.

If you are suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, the winter might seem eternal.  When will it end?  Not only does the weather cause you to be unhappy, but also the lack of sunlight affects your seasonal depression.  Therefore, the sooner the winter ends, the better.  In order to remain optimistic, it might be helpful to take things a day at a time.  The following are great practices to implement everyday.


Focus On The Present


Although you may not like the winter, it is reality.  Wishing for summer will only worsen your depression.  Focus on what is real – what is occurring right now.  There are probably great things happening and you might not notice them because of your mood.


Be Positive


A positive attitude will help you as you strive to overcome SAD.  Negative thoughts and attitudes will only worsen your depression.  Look for the good each day and try not to get frustrated about the bad.

There is so much in life that is outside of your control.  If you waste time focusing on these issues, you will be constantly frustrated.  Instead, focus on what you can control.  You will be happier if you do this.
