Get Up And Get Going

Many people that are suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder suffer from fatigue.  SAD is a mental disorder that presents symptoms much like depression.  And, those that suffer from SAD often note fatigue as one of their top symptoms.  Is there a way to combat the fatigue?  Sometimes the best method is to simply get up and get going.

Trick Your Brain

Have you ever been sick with the flu or a cold?  Most likely you have.  Usually you lie in bed, resting to overcome your symptoms.  However, sometimes this is not an option.  Or, there are times when you are tired of feeling sick.  In these instances, many people decide to simply get up and get going.  They don’t want to waste away their life being sick.  Instead, they move forward.  And, in doing so, they trick their brain.  Their new attitude helps them overcome their sickness.  This is an example of the power of positive thinking.

When You Are SAD

If you are suffering from SAD and fatigue, the best cure may be to simply get up and get going.  While you may have to go to your doctor and get help, this simple attitude adjustment will go a long way in affecting your ability to cope with your SAD symptoms.  Although you may be tired, you might find that once you get moving the fatigue will disappear.

Resilience Is Easier Than You Think

sad lights

In the book Stumbling On Happiness, the author comments on the topic of “resilience.”  The book discusses the idea that humans are much more resilient than we give ourselves credit for.  In fact, usually we assume situations are going to be much more difficult than what we think we can handle.  Somehow, though, we manage to get through and bounce back.  This is because we are resilient.

Finding Resilience

In life, finding resilience might not always come easy.  It may not be as simple as it sounds to bounce back from something hard.  And, if you are struggling emotionally with Seasonal Affective Disorder, bouncing back can be even more difficult.  However, resilience is possible.  You are capable of it.  And, it begins with your attitude.

Your Thoughts

Your thoughts greatly influence your character and actions.  Too often individuals want to have pity parties for themselves.  Instead of basking in your misery, find the joy in your life.  Most likely it is all around you.  Finding it might take some effort.  However, when you do, you will notice that the positive will greatly affect your attitude and how you handle your SAD symptoms.  Although you might still need help from your doctor, this mental shift in your thoughts will greatly aid you in the process.

Plan Your Diet

One of the major contributors to certain mental illnesses, including Seasonal Affective Disorder, is a poor diet.  Those people that do not make the effort to eat healthy often are more at risk for the development of mental illnesses.  And, SAD sufferers in particular can easily fall into the habit of eating poorly.

Planning Ahead

One idea to help SAD sufferers with their diet is to plan ahead.  It can be easy to fall into bad habits when it comes to eating.  There are so many easy choices that are unhealthy.  However, a little planning will allow individuals to eat properly and enable them to get the nutrition their body needs.

Physical Health

While the individual is suffering from a mental condition, it is important to remember that physical health can affect the quality of the condition.  If a person is healthy physically, they will most likely have an easier time dealing with common mental illness symptoms.  However, poor physical health issues will only make the symptoms worse.  Therefore, it is important that these people take care of their health and take the steps to eat properly and stay healthy.

Talk To Your Doctor

If you need help determining what foods are best for you, talk with your doctor.  Remember, your doctor is always there as a resource.

Oversleeping During The Winter

sad lights

Seasons come and seasons go.  With the change in seasons, you might notice changes in your daily patterns.  For example, it is common to have more energy in the summer.  There is so much to do when it is hot outside and the sun is shining.  However, when the sun shines less it may be difficult to find the energy to get up and get moving.  Often, individuals tend to oversleep during the colder months of the year.

Why Sleep?

Many people recognize that they sleep more during these months, yet they do not understand why.  They wonder if they are simply more tired during the winter months, or just have nothing better to do than sleep.  If you find that you are oversleeping, there could be many reasons for the problem.  However, it could also be a result of a chemical imbalance in your body.

Chemical Imbalance

Sometimes the lack of sunlight exposure can cause a chemical imbalance in your body.  The increased darkness will cause your body to produce more melatonin, which regulates your sleeping habits.  An excess of melatonin can cause you to sleep more often and experience more fatigue.  It can also lead to conditions like Seasonal Affective Disorder. You can prevent wintertime sleeping issues by using a dawn simulator to help regulate this type of imbalance.
