The Benefits Of The Sun

For the last few years, doctors and health experts have advised individuals to stay away from the sun.  Too much time in the sun can lead to serious risks, including skin cancer.  For this reason, many people avoid the beach and stay inside.  While it does make sense from a skin cancer perspective, the sun is not all bad.  There are actually benefits to the sun.

Vitamin D

Time in the sun allows the body to receive vitamin D.  This vitamin plays a vital role in many organs in the body.  It is necessary for bone growth and bone health.  Without enough vitamin D, your bones might become brittle, thin, or misshapen.  It is not enough to simply drink milk.  You must also take in the sun as well.

Serotonin

In addition to vitamin D, the sun also provides the body with serotonin.  Serotonin is a hormone that regulates your mood.  Without enough serotonin, you might be subject to irritability, moodiness, and even depression.  For this reason, many people suffer winter depression.  This condition is commonly known as Seasonal Affective Disorder.  This seasonal illness can be treated, however, if left alone the symptoms can worsen.  Therefore, if you are lacking sun, talk to your doctor about ways to help you in your life.
